Only 1 week into the 2009 Super League competition, the event is already considered a great succuss. Teams took to Miller Reserve yesterday to battle it out for round 1 honours, with Team FTM taking out Game 1 over Team Velocity and the Laxscene Lizards taking out Game 2 over Hansen Yuncken.
Game 1 was a tight battle, with Team Velocity controlling the first quarter 3-1, and FTM fighting back the scores to 4 a peice at the half. The 3rd quarter was big scoring, with Velocity regaining control winning the quarter 5-3. Brett Langstreth of Velocity was the first to take advantage of the 2 point arc,.getting a sweet shot from the 45 with his long pole. Another fightback from FTM in the final quarter saw them trailing by 1 with less than a minute to go, before Anson Carter of FTM slotted a 2 pointer, taking them to a 1 point win in the dying seconds.
Game 2 saw the Laxscene Lizards fire out to 6-2 lead after the 1st quarter over Hansen Yuncken. Ryan Gaspari of the Lizards bagged 3 early and was looking unstoppable. Hansen Yuncken fought back in a very tight 2nd, but needed more luck on the cage to get back in the game. Tom Vickery in goals for the Lizards kept Hansen Yuncken to only 1 in the 3rd, while a 2 pointer from Tom Freeman put the Lizards in a very dominant position, sitting 10-5 up at the end of the 3rd. The 4th quarter was again tight, with Hansen Yuncken giving it all they had with Nigel Wapper getting his 3rd, and Stephen Mortimer too quick for everyone. Ryan Gaspari bagged another 2 to bring the Lizards the win 13-8.
